Lieux de Musique IV

Non Lieux

Symposium subjects in previous years have covered traditional concert venues, but this year’s discussion will focus on sites never desined for concerts – a railway concourse, harborside, museum or ruins – yet chosen by composers.  Productions by the Festival d’Automne à Paris have included Polytope by Xenakis in an ancient Roman bathhouse (1972), Prometeo by Nono in the Chaillot theater stripped of all fittings (1987), Quodlibet by Nunes (1992) in the Salle Wagram where boxing matches were suspended, and Sciarrino’s composition with 150 saxophonists strolling through the Musée d’Orsay (2003).  And what of Stockhausen sculpting reverberations through the caves of Jeita near Beirut, plus questions of public policy on musical uses for industrial wasteland?
