Judith Butler

Judith Butler, a major figure in contemporary international thought, is a philosopher living in the United States. A lecturer at the University of California at Berkeley, Judith Butler has developed an original body of philosophical thought based on critical dialogue with a number of major figures, including Simone de Beauvoir, Michel Foucault, Louis Althusser, Jacques Derrida, Jacques Lacan and Monique Wittig. A leading figure in queer theory and gender studies, Judith Butler published Gender Trouble in the United States in 1990. In this internationally acclaimed book, published in France in 2005, Butler develops the theory of the ‘performativity of gender’, which has made an essential contribution to the field of feminist studies. Judith Butler was awarded the prestigious Theodor Adorno Prize in 2012 for her lecture What is a Good Life?.

Judith Butler was the intellectual guest of the Centre Pompidou in 2023-2024.
