State of Durango

With the collaboration of Enrique Pérez López (Chiapas) and Francisco Cázares (Durango)

Laborers on cotton plantations in the state of Durango (northern Mexico) first sang canción cardenche, three-voice a cappella polyphony with elements
from ancient hymns brought by missionaries. Two maya women – shamans – from the southern state of Chiapas sing and heal, carrying on traditions
handed down over the centuries.
