Anacarsis Ramos

Born in 1996 in Campeche, Mexico, Anacarsis Ramos is a playwright, set designer, director and actor. He studied theatre and sociology. His work explores the relationship between social reality and its representation in the media, with a particular focus on the various ways in which fiction is used in state, private and community spheres. Through lyricism, humour and parody, his works shed light on the narrative construction of reality and reveal the biases inherent in any representation. Alongside his stage productions, he coordinates educational and theatre research projects. He also writes about theatre on the Mataclase blog. Anacarsis Ramos is a member of the Pornotráfico theatre company, a Mexico City-based collective of artists that views the stage as a space for experimenting with reality. His artistic practice draws on globalised sources (films, YouTube videos, adverts, pop songs, political propaganda), which he juxtaposes and blends with narratives relating to class struggle, colonisation, queer theory and neurodiversity. In most of his works, he employs techniques such as low-budget remakes, fake subtitles, dubbing, karaoke, cosplay, PowerPoint presentations and fake tutorials. Through these methods, he seeks to challenge the dominant aesthetic elitism as well as copyright norms.
