MEXA

Founded in 2015 in São Paulo, the Mexa collective emerged in response to incidents of gender-based violence in local shelter homes. Since its inception, the group has developed a body of work that reflects on the relationships between public space and the museum, everyday life and artistic practice, politics and aesthetics. Mexa works through improvisation and collective creation, engaging with social and artistic questions alike. The collective has been presented in a number of festivals and venues, including VERBO (2018), the 11th and 13th editions of the Sesc Biennial of Dance (2019, 2021), the 6th Mostra Internacional de Teatro (2020), Panorama Raft Festival (2021), Arte Passagem (2022), and Mamba Negra Festival (2022). They have also taken part in exhibitions such as Dance Stories (Museum of Art of São Paulo, 2020), Somos muit+s (Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo, 2021), and Começo de século (Galeria Jaqueline Martins, 2021). Since 2016, Mexa has been in residence at Casa do Povo.
