Ni Zheng
Ni Zheng (b. 1997, CN) is a composer of electroacoustic music whose work explores the poetics and grotesque of the body. Through sonic rituals, she channels raw impulses, eroticism, and rage as acts of resistance against domestication. Her visceral vocal performances, field recordings from desolate sites, and blend of electronic and acoustic instruments seek ecstatic communication with both human and non-human realms. Her debut album Body of Immanence (Syrphe, 2023) was praised by La Revue des Ressources as “a form of Artaudian theatre of cruelty.” Her second album, fetid things (Don’t Look Back Records), was released in 2024. A recipient of the Talea Ensemble’s 2024/25 Early Career Commission, her works have been featured at impuls (AT), MA/IN (IT), Mixtur (ES), ICMC (CL), NYCEMF (USA), and more. Ni holds a BA from New England Conservatory and is currently a PhD candidate at UC San Diego.
