[Music]Hugues Dufourt’s first string quartet, Dawn Flight, was inspired by the visual universe of the painter Stanley Hayter. For Dum Transisset (2007), Brian Ferneyhough turned to Renaissance plain song, creating four pieces evoking the music of Christopher Tye; while Birtwistle chose the Scottish poet Sorley MacLean for his quartet The Tree of Strings, exploring past time spent on the Isle of Raasay
