With a simple set and a choreography based on ordinary gestures, Umwelt reflects Maguy Marin’s move towards minimalism. She uses the intermittent structure of pre-cinematographic devices to approach the concreteness of everyday life: like a zoetrope creating life through a series of fixed frames, the panels in Umwelt use intervals as a way to create movement.
