To dance, to fall, to touch, to sleep, to listen, to move, to be born, to die, to swim. All these verbs have this in common: in Greek and Sanskrit, they are neither in the active nor in the passive, but in another mode: the mean. The means says something like: every touch is a being-touched, every birth is something I do and that happens to me, every swim is both a breaststroke and a letting oneself be carried by the water. Dance is one of those middle gestures, through which I never quite know about whom it is being said.
