In Beautiful Trouble, devised for and with the JACK Quartet, Natacha Diels does away with the dividing line between life and the work itself, electrifies the saturation of the times we live in and plays around with the hypnotic omnipresence of images. At the crossroads between performance art and installation, this chamber opera for the eyes and ears draws upon text, gesture, electronics and video in order to probe our most vivid emotions.
Each of the five acts, or rather episodes, of Beautiful Trouble develops its own storyline, linked to a member of the string quartet or a random member of the audience. These storylines unfurl via all the dimensions of the work, be they physical, sound-based, or visual — in other words, musical, theatrical, choreographic or video-based. The narrative and multiple sensory experiences oscillate between realism pushed to its limits, verging on hyperrealism, and illusion, fiction or dream. "The piece focuses on the beauty of simple moments, through activities such as morning walks, dinners with friends, children's games and songs around a campfire." However, beneath the disparate images, ranging from pink flamingos to American landscapes, lurks a sense of unease, absurdity, nonsense, and strangeness of a disturbing kind. And also that of the "Uncanny Valley", the theory according to which the less artificial an android robot seems, the more monstrous its imperfections appear to us.
