As part of European Heritage Days and Carte Blanche Casa do Povo, Maison des Métallos is offering Balades des Communs (Walk of the Commons). This event invites residents to meet the people who bring the neighbourhood to life and keep it moving.
Focused on transmission, this tour invites visitors to explore the neighbourhood through the prism of Jewish memory and its contemporary resonances, between working-class history and shared cultural heritage. In the same spirit as the Casa do Povo in Sao Paulo, Paris has received a rich heritage from the Jewish labour movement in all its forms: from the end of the 19th century onwards, immigrant workers who spoke Yiddish or Judeo-Spanish and their children born in France developed a vibrant community life in working-class neighbourhoods, leaving a lasting mark on local history.
This walk offers a glimpse of some of the most significant locations. It will be led by Philippe Boukara, a historian specialising in contemporary French Judaism and a native of Belleville, who was for many years the training coordinator at the Shoah Memorial.
