The Festival d'Automne in Paris is the producer of this exhibition,
in partnership with RATP and the Galeries Lafayette group.

Invited for the first time to the Festival d’Automne, Christine Sun Kim is a multi-disciplinary artist working at the crossroads between the visual arts, sign language and music. Taking her inspiration from musical notation and other graphic information systems, she unfurls in the public space an exhibition which combines humour and critical thought. In doing so, she overturns all expectations in relation to the non-auditory and political dimensions of sound.

The new series of large-scale works by Christine Sun Kim can be seen in the corridors of the metro and the streets of Paris. It taps into the spatial dynamics of sign language, bringing together the configurations of the hand, movement, speed and impact that are essential to it. Using charcoal pencils on paper, her drawings pay homage to American sign language and its rich history, shaped, in part, by that of French sign language. They are part of a much wider project based on the documentation, preservation and transmission of deaf culture and history, whilst occupying a prominent visual space at the same time; "I want the scale to actively impose the existence and culture of deaf people in the everyday lives of the non-deaf” she affirms.
