Christine Sun Kim’s multifaceted practice explores the manner in which sound and language function in society. At the crossroads between written text, systems of visual notation, American sign language (ASL) and video, she deconstructs the social hierarchies of sound and the spoken word.
In Community Sigh, the pluri-disciplinary artist uses the sigh as the key expression of the times we live in. Originally presented in the form of a sound installation composed of records, the work gathers the sighs of more than sixty deaf people in an asynchronous choir of exhaustion. She now reimagines and develops this work in the form of performance, placing the sigh at the centre not only as an expression of sound, but also as a visual expression. For Christine Sun Kim, the sigh becomes a symbol of political exhaustion, particularly in the case of marginalised groups involved in a struggle for visibility and rights, but also as a space for pause, regeneration and coming together in a collective way.
