The Théâtre Public de Montreuil—Centre dramatique national, The Swiss Cultural Centre and the Festival d’Automne à Paris present this show in corealisation.

Two years after L’œil nu, the choreographer Maud Blandel returns to the Festival d’Automne with Same Old Songs, a piece which takes its inspiration from Virginia Woolf. Between rhythmic hallucination and an unstable trio, it is the extension of a pacifist gesture that flies in the face of the inevitability of war, and goes in search, via the body and sound, of other possible futures.

A piece for three dancers, Same Old Songs takes as its point of departure Three Guineas by Virginia Woolf. Written in 1938 in the form of an epistolary fiction, it gives shape to the response of an “educated man’s daughter”, to the question that an “educated man” poses to her: “in your opinion, what can we do to avoid war?”. Loosely based on this work, Same Old Songs opts for a psychedelic imaginary world and takes the form of an hallucination. Within an ultra-dynamic, disorganised, percussive flow, the choreographer continues to explore sound and movement-based relationships. Following multiple collaborations with different ensembles, Maud Blandel teams up with percussionist Romain Simon in the aim of turning sound design into a dramaturgical driving force in its own right. The performativity they set out to obtain is above all an anarchic one. Through a search for moving bodies at their most intense, at times seized by the rhythm, at others rooted to the spot, any attempt at marching in step is knowingly thwarted.
