Natacha Diels

Natacha Diels is a composer and performer whose work merges choreographed movement, video, instrumental practice, and surreal play. Recent projects include Ways to Pass the Day (Nueva Ópera Buenos Aires, 2024), Everything Everywhere with Ensemble Adapter (2024), and Beautiful Trouble with JACK Quartet (2019–24). Upcoming: Follow Unfollow for Ensemble Contrechamps (Festival Archipel 2025) and a solo album on Carrier Records (2025). Described as “a tour de force of reckless imagination” (Musical America), her music has been performed by Ensemble Intercontemporain, Ensemble Adapter, JACK Quartet, and others. She is a founding member of Ensemble Pamplemousse and WENDY. Recent commissions include works for Borealis Festival, Fromm Foundation, Barlow Foundation, and Darmstadt. Diels holds degrees from NYU and Columbia and is Assistant Professor of Composition at the University of Pennsylvania.

In Beautiful Trouble, devised for and with the JACK Quartet, Natacha Diels does away with the dividing line between life and the work itself, electrifies the saturation of the times we live in and plays around with the hypnotic omnipresence of images. At the crossroads between performance art and installation, this chamber opera for the eyes and ears draws upon text, gesture, electronics and video in order to probe our most vivid emotions.
