Following on from Reconstitution : Le Procès de Bobigny and Rituel 4 : Le Grand Débat, Émilie Rousset furthers her exploration of our contemporary archives by examining encounters with lawyers and litigants in Europe.

In Affaires Familiales, she retraces intimate accounts and their confrontation with the law, and in doing so poses questions about justice as a space for the transformation of speech. On stage, seven European performers play out these encounters: a female lawyer specializing in child abduction, another female lawyer who is an expert in the rights of LGBTQIA+ families, the Italian father of a child born by surrogacy, a Catalan female police officer from the Mossos d'Esquadra. The piece looks at different cases, such as the silencing of accusations of incest, and victories in the European Court of Human Rights. In line with her approach, Émilie Rousset sets up interplay by means of juxtapositions and discrepancies between what is documented and its on stage portrayal. The staging puts into perspective video projection, the individual performances of the actors and actresses, and the audience's gaze. It invites us to be in as close proximity as possible to these cases, in which the judgement of each situation constitutes a new challenge to justice and questions society at large.
