“Beauty is secondary” is one of the instructions that appears at the beginning of the fourth movement of the Sonata for Solo Viola, Op. 25 No. 1, by the German composer Paul Hindemith (1895–1963). It could well have been uttered by his compatriot, the Expressionist choreographer Dore Hoyer (1911–1967), creator of the dance cycle Afectos Humanos, on which Pol Pi has been working since 2014.

A musician before becoming a dancer, Pol Pi aims to create a dialogue between these two works that have shaped his career; both consist of five short solos that are as minimalist as they are expressive, composed by artists who, in the course of their careers, suffered the consequences of the Nazi regime.
