La Commune, Centre Dramatique National d’Aubervilliers and the Festival d’Automne à Paris present this performance in co-production.
Past masters in the art of collage and multi-disciplinary montage, The Wooster Group, co-founded and directed by Elizabeth LeCompte, has been a regular guest at the Festival d’Automne since 1999. Always at the forefront of scenographic techincal innovation, the American director is a major figure of the avant-garde, notably with her re-readings of classic texts.
In Symphony of Rats, directed by Elizabeth LeCompte and co-founder of The Wooster Group Kate Valk, the New York company reinvents a piece by Richard Foreman dating back to 1988. Its narrative centres upon a megalomaniac American president who descends into madness. Perched upon his toilet-throne, he tunes into illusory extraterrestrial transmissions, whilst a series of surrealist images unfurls around him. Symphony of Rats is a reflection on the effervescence and topography of the group’s collective imagination: balls, songs, video, films, paintings and accessories recycled from former productions, and to which are now added the tools belonging to the birth of artificial intelligence. Far-reaching and conceived with the utmost precision, The Wooster Group assembles a succession of hallucinatory fragments in order to bring us a satirical science-fiction musical, based on power and madness.
