Hiroshi Sugimoto

Hiroshi Sugimoto was born in Tokyo in 1948 and moved to New York in 1974. A multidisciplinary artist, he works in photography, sculpture, architecture, the performing arts and writing. His work explores time, memory and perception, drawing on both Eastern and Western philosophies. His best-known series are Seascapes, Theaters and Architecture. His works are held in major institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Centre Pompidou. In 2008, he founded the New Material Research Laboratory, followed by the Enoura Observatory in 2017. He also directs theatre and opera productions. The recipient of numerous international awards, he was appointed an Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters in France in 2013 and a member of the Japan Art Academy in 2023. As part of the Festival d’Automne, he presented Accelerated Buddha and Double Suicide at Sonezaki in 2013, followed by Sambasô, Divine Dance in 2018.
