How can we give visibility to a case that has ended in a non-lieu, or “dismissal”? Ten years after the death of Rémi Fraisse during a demonstration against the Sivens dam, director Olivier Coulon-Jablonka and filmmaker Sima Khatami use theatre as a place in which to question democracy.
On the night of the 25th to 26th October 2014, the base camp of the Sivens dam construction site was the scene of violent clashes. At 1:45 a.m., the body of the environmental demonstrator Rémi Fraisse was found dead. Overflowing with eye-witness accounts, evidence, reports by experts and material taken from the hearings, the investigation file examining these facts was transferred to the judicial archives after the case was dismissed in 2018. No trial is to be held, and thus no confrontation between the two conflicting versions. The 10,000 pages of documents are like a play which has been written but never performed. Through the means of theatre, the meticulous approach of documentary work and a syntax borrowed from film editing, Olivier Coulon-Jablonka and Sima Khatami plunge us headlong into this dossier. It becomes the raw material for the text which is entrusted to the seven performers, who switch roles in order to reenact certain fragments and compare them. Putting on display first-hand elements and also functioning as an investigation into an investigation, Non-lieu embraces uncertainty in order to broaden our approach to the real.
