Brazilian choreographer Lia Rodrigues returns with Borda, a new piece that marks and celebrates the 35th anniversary of the Lia Rodrigues Companhia de Danças, a company that set up its home in the Maré favela in Rio de Janeiro in 2004.
Inspired by the versatility of the term "borda" in Portuguese, meaning "border", "confines", "threshold", "limit", or "barrier", but also "dream" and "fantasy", Lia Rodrigues invites us to go beyond the perception of borders as a simple physical space that generates exclusion. Borda brings to life stage costumes and archived objects belonging to the emblematic shows made by the company during its thirty-five years of existence. In search of new poetic and utopian territories, nine performers give themselves over to nomadic flows and weave a “living embroidery” set in motion by interdependence and the fluidity of othernesses. Similar to an edge, the porosity of mental and physical borders creates a fiction in which dreams, fantasy and metamorphosis intertwine, revealing the fabrics of reality in a different light.
