Set to music by the Australian trio The Necks, FOOD COURT plunges a woman headlong into the all-too banal horrors of a humiliating experience in the public space. Featuring a cast of three female performers with learning difficulties, the piece transforms into an experience of an intense, unsettling kind.
First performed in 2008, FOOD COURT is one of the best known and highly-acclaimed shows by Australian company Back to Back Theatre. It unfurls at the frontier between theatre and concert, underpinned by an extended improvisation in the hands of cult trio The Necks. For nearly forty years now, the latter have been past masters in the art of forging links between jazz and minimalism. The darkly enchanting, at times, dissonant, music played live by the Australian musicians accompanies the drama that takes place on the stage. Two women dressed in gold-coloured leotards intimidate and harass a third woman, in a suburban food court. At first, the vast space lined up with the different food outlets is symbolised by a brightly lit, all-white stage. As the bouts of violence and cruelty are unleashed, the piece leaves behind this stark, cold realism in favour of a more contrasting and mysterious scenography, taking us on a journey into a dream-like universe. Together, music, lighting, narrative and the performers shape an experience of an intense, almost hallucinatory kind, in which human dignity is lost and won, in between a fried food stand and a Sushi bar.
