Prior to its first performances in 2027, Back to Back Theatre invites audiences to discover the different phases of work behind NEANDERTHAL—Histoire(s) du théâtre VIII by being present during its rehearsals. This ambitious new piece looks into the themes of extinction and cognition.

Putting together the different narratives in a joyfully flexible manner, NEANDERTHAL—Histoire(s) du théâtre VIII oscillates between prehistory and today. It follows in the footsteps of a famous dubbing actor, who specialises in the American accent and the learned register, but who does not succeed in living the life he has always dreamt of. Confronted with the limitations and shortfalls in his ability whilst recording a web series entitled The Last of the Neanderthals, his story finds a disturbing echo with that of a species which became extinct forty millennia ago. Drawing upon exchanges with paleoanthropologists, a philosopher, a Lacan psychoanalyst and six performers with intellectual and social disabilities, the piece tackles, in a virulent way, validism and human exceptionalism. It does so by tapping into the conventions and aesthetics of the wildlife documentary format. For the whole of the month of November, Back to Back Theatre will be opening up rehearsals for this new work, allowing audiences to discover from the inside its methods, singularities and thought-provoking approach—which earned this artists collective a Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale in 2024.
