La Ménagerie de verre and the Festival d’Automne in Paris present this show in corealisation.
Originally from Buenos Aires, the choreographer and performer Diana Szeinblum turns to Argentinian folklore dances and then deconstructs them. A piece which is both introspective and performative, ADENTRO! delves deep into the inner workings of bodily forms shaped by popular imagination and its gestures.
Can a body be shaped in order to embody the popular ideal? On the contrary, is it possible to unlearn knowhow from popular culture that has been learnt by body? If ADENTRO! plunges into the "innards" of Argentinian folklore, Diana Szeinblum’s aim is very definitely to go beyond traditional frameworks. First performed ten years ago in Buenos Aires, the piece dissects inherited gestures from local dances and closely examines their symbolic resonances via the prism of national identity. In an uncluttered space, set to Axel Krygier’s percussive rhythms and soundscapes, three performers integrate the codes of folklore and then promptly subvert them: virile, puffed-up chests, vigorous strikes of the heel, and gracious, outstretched legs... As their movements fall into disarray, their bodies, both archive and interface, shift into far more strange territories. Between motion and emotion, the trio explores new physical territories in which tradition finds itself in a perpetual quest for meaning.
