During her second week in Paris, nora chipaumire invites audiences to a carte noire rendez-vous consisting of an evening of dub. She will be setting up a Zimbabwean shebeen, an unofficial bar tucked away in private homes, a place where people come together in order to invent forms of resistance and insurrection in response to the political powers that be.
Centred upon the sound system that she has designed especially for the occasion and set up in the Ménagerie de Verre’s main hall, she explores dub from the viewpoint of a residue and product of transatlantic human trade, and what the continued existence of the Commonwealth has to offer, a system which conceals the refusal of the empire to share its wealth. shebeenDUB—a remix—Zimstyle—soundsystem, stirs up the anger that existed both before and after the pandemic. It takes on the form of a sound and visual-based declaration of a radical Black accusation, and opens up a host of creative, transgressive possibilities both in relation to sound and proximity between human beings.
