The performance piece The present is not enough, directed by Silvia Calderoni and Ilenia Caleo, deals with the utopia of the body. The recumbent, sinuous, and twisted onstage bodies flirt and are flirted with, exploring forms of unbridled intimacy. In doing so, they create an opening on new modalities of relationships.

The starting point is the historical experience of cruising on the New York City piers in the late 1970s, and early 1980s. Gay men came here to hang out, fuck, take drugs, and photograph each other. This was prior to the onset of AIDS and gentrification, which lead to the annihilation of these spaces of artistic and sexual experimentation. Silvia Calderoni and Ilenia Caleo draw on documentary archives from the time, in particular the photographs of Peter Hujar and the audio diaries of David Wojnarowicz, in order to build a new, imaginary world on the basis of an experience they did not live through. In The present is not enough, the mixture of temporalities combines with the entanglement of lustful bodies in an attempt to conjure up "baluginii" - glimmers of hope in response to an overwhelming desire for community. Together, they draw up the contours of an emancipatory political project.
