The Centre Pompidou and the Festival d'Automne à Paris are co-producers of this project and present it as a collaborative project.
As part of the Centre Pompidou’s Constellation programme.
For more than 50 years, the Centre Pompidou and the Festival d'Automne have been contributing to the redefinition of the cultural landscape, based on a bold commitment to creation, and thus making contemporary arts shine nationally and internationally. Drawing on a long-standing collaboration, the two institutions are teaming up this year around an ambitious program, honouring the creation of choreographer Noé Soulier and musician and visual artist Tarek Atoui, as well as that of the performer and filmmaker Gabriela Carneiro da Cunha. Together, the Centre Pompidou and the Festival d'Automne also imagine an «Evening School», thought and orchestrated by the philosopher and economist Felwine Sarr.
In November 2023, the Festival d'Automne hosted an audience encounter with Angela Davis in which reflections on current events in the arts intersected with global political issues. From out of this meeting came the idea of an École du soir “evening school”, in conjunction with the Centre Pompidou and in collaboration with the Senegalese intellectual and economist Felwine Sarr, The different events focus on a central question, that of a “A life in common”.
With its long-standing tradition of conferences, debates and ideas-based dialogue, the Centre Pompidou has been the embodiment of a major place of living thought in Paris since the 1970s. With this same spirit in mind, the Festival d'Automne has devised a new format, that of an “evening school for all”, and which provides an opening onto the imaginary worlds, works and questions arising in the 2025 edition. The thinking behind it is that of a space for non-academic transmission, of the kind that allows knowledge to circulate freely, enabling participants to feels its resonances as opposed to it being set in stone. This cycle is open to all those who question, invent and go in search of knowledge. Staying clear of all forms of compartmentalization, the objective is to come in close proximity to the voices, gestures and stories of the world.
Structured around three phases held in several different locations, each sequence unfurls in two formats. One consists of large-scale multidisciplinary meetings bringing together Felwine Sarr and major figures in contemporary thought and artistic creation. The other consists of "sensibility workshops" crafted by other artists and their practices, in close connection with local dynamics and the associative networks present in the different areas.
